Vaughan's cutting centrifugal pump - ideal for e.g. pumping stations
The Vaughan pump is a high performer in pumping stations, for example, but can be used to advantage in many different applications where there are problems with clogging, or where the medium needs to be cut in order to be pumped.
Common applications are:
- Circulation over heat exchangers in digesters
- Digester agitation, with or without MaxMix
- Stirring in mixed sludge tanks
- Agitation in sludge storage tank before dewatering
- Wastewater pumping stations
- Paper and pulp industry, e.g. debarking, sumps, process drains

With MAF's help, a number of ”standard pumps” have been replaced with Vaughan cutting pumps in the plants where there have been recurring problems with rags and tough fractions. The pump with associated guide bracket has been adapted with a slightly more flexible motor size to easily replace the existing pump and fit the customer's standard. The result is a clear reduction in maintenance.
How the Vaughan cutting sewage pump works
The Vaughan Chopper Pump should not be confused with other chopper pumps or macerators. The Vaughan pump is uniquely designed to optimally chop and pump demanding products.
The Vaughan Chopper Pump has several unique patented solutions to make it the world leading chopper pump:
- Vaughan's oil-lubricated cartridge seal stands up to the toughest media far better than standard single mechanical shaft seals. This means less risk of clogging and wear.
- Contaminants and fibres that enter behind the impeller are cut and carried away by the back vanes that cut against the rear knife edges.
Solid particles and fibres are chopped between the rotating curved and sharpened leading edges of the pump vanes, and the fixed double knife. - The curvature of the blades provides a smooth cutting action without shock loading. The cutter cuts long-fibre material that would otherwise tend to wrap around the wheel hub.
- In some applications, an additional cutting tool is used to cut up very large solids so that they do not block the inlet.
- The tolerances between the cutting elements are tight and are easily maintained via set screws without the need to disassemble the centrifugal pump.
